5 Delicious Sweets from Recommended Chic Cafes in Kyoto
Kyoto is the Mecca of Japan's cafe culture. Many cafes focus on gathering up all their inspiration and coming up with original products every day to keep the interest of their customers seeking delicious treats, both from in Japan and from overseas.
Here we will be introducing the cafe sweets that one of our authors, who visits Kyoto's cafes every week, highly recommends! Delight in these tastes as you wander around Kyoto!
1. Kamata Mise
This little cafe retreat, run by a married couple with a unique sense, has only 8 seats available.
It hasn't received much media attention yet, but its unique desserts often are uploaded onto Instagram, so it's steadily amassing new fans.
If you happen to come by, we'd like to recommend their "monthly ice cream." You'll surely be amazed by their ice cream flavors made with ingredients like vegetables, cheese, and olive oil!
We also recommend their "ginger cream soda," another popular item made with ginger ice cream.
Address: 43-2 Koyamashimohatsunecho, Kita-ku, Kyoto-shi, Kyoto
This dango shop is located near the Keihan Railway's "Demachiyanagi Station."
Their popular "mitarashi dango" costs just 200 yen. This dango is crispy on the outside and chewy on the inside, and it's somewhat filling, making it the perfect snack if you're just a little hungry.
Our author who visits Kyoto's cafes loves to take this lightly sweet dango with her as a snack while she walks along the Kamogawa River down to Shimogamo Shrine.

3. Alpha foods and drink
This cafe is located near the famous tourist spot Nijo Castle.
Their unique tiramisu, made with a flowerpot motif, has been gaining a lot of popularity among Kyoto tourists.
We personally recommend their "cloudy cafe," made with cotton candy to look like a cloud.
The cotton candy melts as the coffee steams, sweetening the coffee as it dissolves, making this a very novel drink!
Be sure to take the chance to try some of Kyoto's state-of-the-art sweets!
Address: 327 Nishidaikokucho, Nakagyo-ku, Kyoto-shi, Kyoto
4. JAM JAR LOUNGE
This chic cafe was built inside a renovated old "machiya" townhome.
Once you step inside, you'll be greeted by a super-modern atmosphere that you wouldn't expect from Kyoto.
Their featured items are their "Jaffles," hot sandwiches made by the friendly Australian owner.
The intense sweetness of their "Banana, Berries, Hazelnut Chocolate Cream Jaffles," served with whipped cream, is sure to blow away any exhaustion you may have from your walk around Kyoto!
Address: 758-2 Higashi-Imakoji-cho, Kamigyo-ku, Kyoto-shi, Kyoto
5. Kitten & Donuts
This doughnut shop, recently opened in Kawaramachi, the heart of Kyoto sightseeing, is aiming to be "cute"!
Their sinfully good doughnuts are sweet and chewy, made with domestic wheat, soy milk, condensed milk, and butter.
Right now, their most popular item is their "K&D Kitten Charmy," a colorful doughnut topped with ice cream.
Mixing doughnuts and ice cream just seems like a logical step to take!
Be sure to try this delightful sweet post-haste when you stop by Kyoto!
